The main character Léon Fischer is a mourning transporter: he picks up mortal remains of perished nationals. An adventurous living at first sight, but his years of heroism are over now. His relationship with the ravishing beauty Zahira is perfect, until one day she starts praying before dinner, which leads to a grim religious strife. Léon seeks comfort with his best friend, the flamboyant and retired journalist Adriaan Kroon. He is twice as old as Léon and has always been his idol. Kroon is the the only person in who he recognizes his own furious and rowdy battle for freedom and independence. Léon is 29 years old when he decides to make one more big splash. But his biliousness, combined with his weakness for booze and women, makes his relationship with Zahira more and more complicated. When Adriaan Kroon dies suddenly, and Zahira returns to her parents, the downfall of Léon Fischer seems to be irrevocable.
